A Call To Pride by Poppy Woods

Please welcome debut author Poppy Woods and her book A Call To Pride

* Tell us a bit about yourself

Ahhh, I’m terrible at this. I’m Poppy… I’m short, southern, and swear like a well educated sailor? I’m a mom. I have two evil day jobs in addition to arguing with fictional characters (quite frequently *while* I’m at my evil day job, much to my boss’s dismay)

* Have you always wanted to become an author?

I have always wanted to write. I don’t know that I always wanted to publish anything. I used to write a ton of poetry… probably from the time I was like 7-20. I have those in a binder somewhere, they got me through hard times.
A Call To Pride is the first story I’ve actually finished. I’ve started writing it and a hundred other stories a million times and just never had the willpower to finish. I’d try to edit it while I was still writing and get discouraged and scrap everything.

* What was your inspiration for your current book/series?

Liza’s story is a little bit of everything to me. She has parts of me in her and parts that are completely organic, a product of my weird and twisted imagination.
The series as a whole (Unsung Veil) will focus on other characters throughout the series. My inspiration for the series is honestly a combination of reading works like The Damon’s Mountains series by TS Joyce and the Wings of Artemis series by Rebecca Royce and wanting to create a book world like that. A book world where there is a single universe that all these characters share, and maybe some of them know each other, but everything comes back to a single plot thread. Eventually. I guess we will have to see if I pull that off.

* What are you working on now?

Right now I’m writing Unsung Veil Book 2 – A Call To War. It’s the conclusion to Liza’s personal part of the story. She will still pop up as a side character in at least a few books, but her personal plot will be done.

* Do you have any quirks while writing?

I don’t know… lol. I get frustrated and close my laptop a lot. I smoke cigarettes religiously during sprint breaks, or when I get to a point in the story where I need some space to think about my next move.

* Do you have any advice for new authors about the publishing world?

I haven’t done traditional publishing and probably never will. I like the indie world. I like being in control of my career and setting my own deadlines. If I had any advice it would be just to write the damn thing. Don’t try to stop to self-edit it. Just get that first draft out onto paper/screen so that you have somewhere to start. If you stop writing it to do anything else, you probably won’t finish it. At least, that’s been true for me a million times.

* What are your hopes for the future?

I have several things in the works. Once I finish writing ACTW (Liza’s second book) I’ll be doing a totally new, secret project with another author, in a completely different universe. Once I finish that secret project, I’ll come back to the Unsung Veil and play with the characters there.
My overall goal is to eventually be a full-time author so that I can focus on my little terrorist at home instead of splitting my time four ways: Momming, Evil day job one, Evil day job two, Author.

* Do you have anything to say to your fans?

Thank you! I realize there may not be that many of you yet, at least not compared to some of the big names in this business, but each and every one of you are important to me. You make it possible for me to chase this dream of mine and I couldn’t possibly be more grateful! Every book, every page read, matters more than you know.

Awakened and Betrayed by Ivy Asher #CoverReveal

Awakened and Betrayed by Ivy Asher book 2 in The Sentinel series going live January 28th

Pre-order link

Blurp:
My name is Vinna and I am a Sentinel.
I’m the last in a line of a hunted, magical race, coveted and killed for our power and abilities.
I was hidden and protected, but now that I’ve been found, it’s a race to see who can command and control me.
Joke’s on them, I bow to no one.
I need to master my magic, and protect the five guys I’ve marked as my own at all costs.
Because the line between friend and foe is dangerously blurry, and I’m collecting enemies like Sentinels collect runes.
It’s time to prepare for battle, claim my place, and get ready to fuck up anything or anyone that comes for me and my Chosen.

Authors Note: This is the second book in The Lost Sentinel Series and ends with a cliffhanger. This book is a medium burn Reverse Harem story, intended for ages 18 years and older. This book contains swearing, graphic sex, and violence.

Ivy Asher’s Sentinels

The Lost and the Chosen by Ivy Asher #whychoose

I’d like you all to welcome to debut author

Ivy Asher of The Lost and the Chosen

Tell us a bit about yourself:

Aw man I never know what to say to this question. I took days to write my Author bio and it’s like 4 lines…lol. Hiya I’m Ivy Asher: I’m a writer, reader, mom, wife, friend, woman, human, and not always in that order. I love books, animals, people who make me laugh, or just love to laugh In general. I like to be real about life, the good, the bad, the brutal, and I value people who feel the same way.

Have you always wanted to become an author?

I am one of those people who just kind of floated around, not really sure what I was meant for. I have always been creative, but I never thought being a writer was an option for me. I grew up a bit rough and it forced me to focus on basic needs and not so much goals or dreams. It wasn’t until I became a mom and I was isolated, a bit lonely, and reading a lot… that I just felt this story sitting inside of my soul. So I wrote down what was there in a note book and I started researching programs to use when writing a book.

What was your inspiration for The Lost and the Chosen?

I had this idea about a story of a girl who was tough, but empathetic, and owned who she was. I wrote the kind of girl I wish I could have read more about growing up. The kind of woman who isn’t just one sided but encapsulates all the incredible things that I think most women are comprised of; our mother hearts, and get shit done attitudes, our resilience, and unique compassion. I wanted to write about a raw, bruised but not down kind of girl, because those are the women I know, and what I’m all about. I knew who Vinna would be and then the rest came as I wrote. I personally love Paranormal and RH, so I knew those would be key elements. I just wrote and then I would go back and edit and then write some more, and then one day I typed, the end, and I had a book!

Do you have any quirks while writing?

I listen to music. Not always, sometimes I need quiet to focus, but for all the badass scenes and fights, I have music on. When I wrote the final scene with Talon I had this one song on repeat. I see things like a movie in my head and then I write it down. I’m very visual in that sense. I need to see it and how it plays out and the soundtrack and all of that, and then I put it all in the computer how it plays out in my mind.

What are you working on now?

I am working on book three, getting merch sorted, and putting a website together… all things other authors have told me I need to have…lol. I’ve been approached about the audio rights to this series, so I’m working on that, and I have two other projects in the works. One is a secret and for the other I was asked to participate in an Anthology for charity so I’m brainstorming ideas for that. Mostly I’m getting ready to publish Book 2 and legitimately terrified that it won’t live up to Book 1. So I’m wrestling with some worry and self doubt, and hoping I don’t shit the bed or let any of the amazing readers down.

What are your hopes for the future?

So I’ve never been a big dreamer or goals kind of girl, but I’ll finish Vinna’s story this year, and then I have some other things planned for that world and stories that I see playing out in it. I have some new stories sitting in my soul, waiting to be written, and I’ve started notebooks for them but they’ll have to wait their turn. I’m going to keep writing and hope that people want to keep reading. I never want to do anything else. It fulfills me and calls to me in ways I never knew “work” could. It was what I was always meant for, but never knew to hope for.

Do you have any advice for new authors about the publishing world?

Oh man advice…Write… if it calls to you or you have a story sitting inside of your soul, go for it. I didn’t go to school for this, I throw commas around like glitter, most days I feel a little bit like a fluke to be honest, but I had this story that I needed to write. I don’t outline or pre-plan I just sit down and go for it and one thing that has helped me in that process is that I write something that I would want to read. Last but not least I would advise, not to hire people to do anything with your book without a contract; I learned that the hard way, but it was a very valuable lesson. Make sure what’s agreed on is in writing, so that you, your work, and your reputation is protected. A lot of this indie publishing business is referral based and not everyone is trust worthy. Be smart, trust your instincts, and protect yourself with a contract.

Do you have anything to say to your fans?

There are no words that truly express just how grateful and humbled I am by your support. You’ve made my dreams come true and I will never be able to repay you for that! I love and appreciate all of you so much, and I’ll work hard to be worthy of you! Thank you to all of you for reading, for reaching out, for the laughs, and the heart felt words. You’re fam now and I fucking love each and everyone of you!!

And now to you Helle…Thank you for your support…seriously I see you recommending the book and showing me so much love and I just want you to know how much it means to me! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

About Ivy:
Ivy Asher is addicted to chai, swearing, and laughing a lot (but not in a creepy, laughing alone kind of way). She loves the snow, books, and her family of two humans, and three fur-babies. She has worlds and characters just floating around in her head, and she’s lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing people who support that kind of crazy.

My review of

The Lost and the Chosen

Covened by Ann Swan #preorder

Please give a warm welcome debut author Ann Swan. Her book Covened: A Magical Reverse Harem Romance (Mrs Pig and the Words of Power Book 1) is on pre-order going live Febuary 1.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF?

Other than being a full-time sarcastic bitch, I am a writer, a mother to 3 kids, and a pug enthusiast. I wanted to write since I was a little girl but the practical people who raised me pushed me to another career, and then my health failed. I’ve had 68 surgeries in the last decade and am finally getting stronger again. Between that and my oldest turning 18 this year I felt like if I was ever going to go after my dream now was the time!

HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BECOME AN AUTHOR?

Oh yes. Since I was little. I taught myself to read listening to books my mom would record onto tapes I’d play in my Care Bear Cassette Player. By the time I was 5 I was reading The Secret Garden and I read Jane Eyre at 8. We lived in the woods and I’d climb trees with books I borrowed and read them. I’d steal Harlequins from my great aunt and hide them in baggies in tree holes. My first book was when I was 9 and I wrote a Jane Eyre rip off called Stuart Hall (which was the name of the pen brand I wrote with).

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE SERIES?

Covened, which is the first book in the Mrs. Pig & the Words of Power series has the best origin story. So like I mentioned, I’m sick. A lot. I spend about 75% of my time stuck in bed. My daughter was given a runt pug by a friend and we named her Luna. She is the biggest character. She fit right in with our rescue dogs and then before we knew it we were making up voices for her and having her narrate our lives. It made all the sucky parts of life better. She is so human, and so caring. One day, my husband and I were making up an alternate life for her while we joked around about reverse harem books…. And then it came to me. I knew it was time to go after my dream, and if I was going to do it I was going to write a story about something I loved.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUIRKS WHILE WRITING?

Some? Maybe? I have to have my legs up. I have short legs so I write in bed, or on the chaise. It has to be a laptop, too. I sit it on my lap direct or lay on my side sideways and type. It also has to be super silent, so that means I do most of my writing after midnight!WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW Right now I am deep into the second book in the series, CURSED. I am also working on a free short story from one of the guys perspectives. After the Mrs. Pig series wraps I’m going to write a series based off the Anastasia Romanov story but in space. It’s called the Hidden Princess series and the first book is Ana of the Stars. The covers are SO CUTE.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR NEW AUTHORS ABOUT THE PUBLISHING WORLD?

I’m pretty new myself, but I do. Protect your reputation like it’s your health. Don’t gossip; it will ALWAYS end up hurting you. Treat your name like a business and keep it clean. Be genuine, work hard, and don’t feel stupid asking questions. Lastly, pay for good editing. It really is worth it.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE?

I want this series to do well so I can use it to pay for the costs of putting out the next one. I want to get better at what I do and write faster. I’m a slow writer. Developing that skill would be so beneficial. I want to get invited to a signing one day. That’s a big goal too… I’m waiting for once Covened hits for that first call out in a fan group. I can’t wait!

DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY TO YOUR FANS?

Hello all four of you! Ha! It’s hard to understand the concept of a fan when my book hasn’t released yet. You could hate it and then where would we be? I consider the people that have followed my journey to this point…the ones like you Helle who are in my group every day and have gotten to know me; I consider you guys family. Friends. Fans is for people I don’t know but like my books. Those would be nice one day, too, but for now I have friends who keep me going. Thank you for being one of those!

MAGIC IS DYING;
CAN I SAVE IT?
IF THE PRICE IS MY HAPPINESS;
CAN I PAY IT?

In the last few generations, only one in a hundred female witches are born with power. So when I came into mine, my grandmother helped me hide it so I wouldn’t be swept away by the ISC, our magical government.

The price of discovery was steep; becoming an ISC drone and being paired with their choice of mate for my coven. So I hid in plain sight working days at Maggie’s Pet Wash, and nights piecing together the mythical Words of Power.

The only thought that keeps me going is figuring out a way to beat the ISC and hopefully fall in love with a coven of my own… maybe even raise a few little witchlings.

So when my familiar, a pug named Mrs. Pig, screws up my one shot at obtaining the Words of Power, I figure everything is ruined. That is until Pierce, Sam, and their own talking dogs walk into my life. Now that I have them, can I give them up? Even to save magic?

The ISC is coming for me. What they don’t know is:
I’M COMING FOR THEM, TOO.

Oath Forger by Nia Mars @niamars_author

– Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m a huge binge reader. If I find an author I like, I will read everything they’ve ever written. I read a book a night. I’m a total insomniac.
– Have you always wanted to become an author?
Yes! LOL As a kid, I used to make up rhymes. I used to hide with books (so I wouldn’t get nabbed for chores), and make up my own stories. They mostly featured princesses, and heavily focused on the ball gowns.
– What was your inspiration for the Oath Forger series?
I ran out of sci-fi romance to read. LOL I wanted something quick and fun, with a kick-ass heroine and guys I could fall in love with. As I thought about it, a story came to life.
– Do you have any quirks while writing?
Not so much of a quirk, but a bad habit. Every time I get stuck with the story, I go and grab a snack. I keep thinking that getting up and walking away from the computer will restart my brain. My desk is by the kitchen door. Not good!!!
– Do you have any advice for new authors about the publishing world?
Write whatever makes you happiest. Be in love with your story. There will be readers who are looking for exactly what you’re looking for. You’re not alone. Put your best ideas out there, and your people will find you.
What are you working on now?
I’m outlining 3 different series. One is sci-fi, in the Oath Forger world. One is dark fantasy. One is contemporary. I love all three. At the moment, I’m worried about the new censorship law in the US. I’m not sure how that will affect romance authors. Will my books be banned because I write love scenes? That I even have to worry about this, is insane.
What are your hopes for the future.
I hope readers will connect to my books. That’s really all I want. I’ve already made a number of online friends who found me because of Oath Forger. The RH community is a wonderful, supportive community. I’m so grateful that I get to be part of it. I hope I’ll get to write more RH stories.
Do you have anything to say to your fans?
A message to readers: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! You are the best. Thank you for reading my books! Thank you for the reviews! Thank you for sharing online. I’m grateful beyond words. Please, please keep reading. And, please, help us authors fight censorship, if you can.
Thank you for taking time to answer all my questions, Nia! 💓
—Thank you so much for interviewing me, Helle!!!

His Knight by Charity Parkerson #Free

Tragedy brought them together. Love will forge them like steel.

The last thing Benny expected was to find himself in the middle of an active shooter event on campus. Canyondale University isn’t the type of place he imagined becoming the center of such brutality. After getting shot in the thigh, he would’ve been dead if not for the SWAT member who rushed to his aid at the moment one of the gunmen was bent on finishing the job.

An explosion of violence is a typical day for Wyatt. It’s his job to charge headfirst into the worst situations. This time is different. Downed by several bullets and left for dead, he might not have made it out alive if not for an unlikely hero—a young college student named Benny. Now, Wyatt can’t stay away from Benny. The man’s dry wit and courageous heart has him mesmerized. Unfortunately, Wyatt’s near-death experience has his ex seeing the light and wanting him back.

Relationships built under such stressful circumstances aren’t known to last, especially when meddling exes are involved. Thankfully for Wyatt, Benny isn’t easily budged, and he’s not giving up his knight without a fight.

Black Dog and Rebel Rose: Chapter I: The Road to Hell by Dani Smith and Alex Julian

I’m lucky today to have the fantastic artist Dani Smith from Quick Draw Studios visiting. She was kind enough to answer a couple of questions about herself and her latest release.

• Tell us a bit about yourself:

I’m a comic book artist, writer, and all around crazy love able tattooed gal hailing from San Diego, CA, USA. I primarily focus on horror and dark urban fantasy themes, which allow me to draw all kinds of awesome monsters! My partner, Alex Julian, recently became my primary colorist; he also designs some of the creatures you will see popping up in my stories. We live in a charming old craftsman cottage in San Diego with our 6 year old boy, Ryker, a spry Jack Russell named Arrow, a fat guinea pig named Freckles, and a very curious Betta fish named Jack. We are the all- American artist family. 😉

• Have you always wanted to become an comic book artist?

Initially, no. I once dreamed of owning an art gallery and being a novelist separately. I started teaching myself the art of comics about six years ago during pregnancy bedrest, and I would never go back. I get to combine art and storytelling…nothing is better. It’s become my absolute passion.

• What was your inspiration for the series?

I have a passion for anthropology, folklore, mythology, theology, and the stories cultures worldwide have told for generations. I was inspired by the beings and creatures that have emerged from these traditions, and I wanted to write a story incorporating them, with characters that are both wondrous and relatable. The end result was BDRR.

• Do you have any quirks while writing?

I like to go sideways—coffee and a glass of wine or champagne at the same time. Gets me both hyped and mellowed, hahaha! Good music is an absolute…it fuels the creative process. I’ll sometimes listen to the same song over and over for hours.

• Do you have any advice for new artists/authors about the publishing world?

First, make a quality product. Quality is absolute. Secondly…DO NOT GIVE UP! This is a rough gig. There will be lean times. Absolute feast or famine. Determination is what will get you through.

• What are you working on now?

The next chapter of BDRR hahaha! We are also starting ASYLUM, a series Alex created about a teen insane asylum with a Lovecraftian theme…this will be the next title we put out. Thirdly, we have SHALE CITY, a punk fey fantasy that I’ve been conceptualizing for the last few years. That will hit this summer…the fans are really excited about that one!

• What are your hopes for the future?

We have a film option for BDRR that is floating around Los Angeles with a really fantastic producer and a few celebrity fans who would like to play the characters. I’m hoping it comes to fruition. The film world is complicated, so we will have to just kick back and see. Book sales will partially be driving the funding for that, so get out there and buy your copies, kids! 😉 💕🌹

• Do you have anything to say to your fans?

You are why I’m here. I love you all and could not be more grateful. I hope to do right by you all by continuing to put out stories that you are excited to read!

Ravens: Sons if Olympia by Helen J. Perry #NewRelease

Today I’m happy to introduce you to Helen J. Perry, the author of Ravens: Sons if Olympia a reverse harem paranormal romance.

– Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m a middle-aged, middle-sized, British woman and mother of three. I wrote my first novel about three or four years ago, and I’ve written science fiction, fantasy and contemporary romance, including straight, bi, lesbian and gay romance.
– Have you always wanted to become an author?
I’ve always loved the two things I’m good at, reading and daydreaming. These are qualities need for being an author, but like many women, for most of my life, I’ve thought I’m not good enough. So, no, I didn’t always plan on being an author because it seemed too lofty an ambition.
– What was your inspiration for the Sons of Olympia series?
I’ve always loved history, especially ancient history, and the mythology associated with it. The specific Greek angle was undoubtedly influenced by my love of the Percy Jackson books and the fact that I’ve visited some of the ancient sites in Greece. I love Greece and intend to visit more of it.
I must be honest, however. These stories started life in a very different way. The initial idea was about a lesbian or gay human being swept off their feet by a powerful and magical gay or lesbian god. I thought it would be interesting to see how close I could write the two books, both a lesbian version and a gay version of the same story.
Sometime after those books were written, I was working on a reverse harem story involving time travel, Vikings and Norse gods, but the other stories were also still in my mind. One day I decided to get out the files and see if what I’d written before could be rewritten with the new ideas in my mind.
Although the first two books in the Sons of Olympus are very similar to the lesbian and gay books, the story in book three is quite different.
– Do you have any quirks while writing?
I prefer to write in silence. It seems many authors prefer music.
– Do you have any advice for new authors about the publishing world?
Self-publishing has made it easier for everyone to publish when it previously seemed impossible. I’d recommend joining a community of supportive authors.
– What are you working on now?
Well, I’m one of those people who finds it hard to focus on and complete a project before starting another. So, before I pulled together the Sons of Olympus trilogy, I was working on a reverse harem series, which would be very similar but linked to Vikings and Norse mythology. However, I may well do something completely different before I finish that. For instance, I do have a contemporary gay Cinderella story that is very nearly finished. I work on things for ages, putting them away and getting them out again.
– What are your hopes for the future?
For my children to grow up, leave home and have happy successful lives! Appart from that I’d hope to write more stories that I enjoy writing, and other people enjoy reading.
– Do you have anything to say to your fans?
Thank you for reading. Thank you for reviewing. I love receiving emails and messages on social media.
– Thank you for taking time to answer all my questions.
Thank you for asking them and giving me the opportunity to tell you about my work.

Writer Group by #editor @DionneLister

Today I give the word to my awesome author, editor and friend Dionne Lister

Hello 😀. As an editor, a reader and the person who vets the Booktastik books, I’ve seen my share of bad editing that authors have had to pay for. Because I also love the idea of improving as an author/writer, I’ve decided to set up a group through Booktastik. It’s a group for writers of all levels to come and ask questions, get writing tips, and find out what constitutes good editing. I want to educate writers and arm them with knowledge that will help them improve their craft and not get ripped off. I also hope to start lots of awesome discussion among writers in a space designed to encourage growth and comradeship in the author community. It would be great to see some of you join, or if you have author friends who could use the support, please tell them about the group. Thanks!

Clash #NewRelease by @charity_parkerso

Today I have the pleasure of presenting Clash by Charity Parkerson. She was also kind to answer some questions for me. Please give her a warm welcome.

– How did you get started writing?

I had a reoccurring dream that wouldn’t leave me alone until I wrote it down. Once I did, it continued growing until it became this entire underground black ops series. I haven’t stopped writing since.

– What genre do you prefer to write/read?

I prefer to write M/M romance. That’s my happy place. I love to read historical romance.

– What inspires you?

Everything. I’m an observer, and a bit of an introvert. I watch and listen. Sometimes, it takes the tiniest thing to spark an entire story in me.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on the 4th book in my “Hellish” series. It’s a M/M paranormal series, filled with vampires, demons, and all other manner of creatures.

– What are your future plans?

I hope to keep writing as much as possible. Last year, I got all my rights back from Ellora’s Cave, so while those book were re-releasing, I had time to get ahead on my current releases. I have a few books sitting on my desktop, waiting for their turn for release. In the meantime, I’m still plugging along. One of my plans is to start a new MMA series.

– Tell me three things that is not commonly known about you.
I spontaneously burst into song.
I hate Chinese food.

My second career love is designing book covers.

Blurb:

Michael let Gavin keep him a secret once. Never again.

In high school, Michael and Gavin were total opposites. Michael was scholarly while Gavin was the athlete. Gavin chased all the girls and tormented Michael for being gay. Michael endured Gavin’s public taunts with grace, because he knew the truth—he was the relationship Gavin really wanted. That is, until Gavin went too far and pushed Michael away for good.

It’s been years since they’ve seen each other, but not much has changed. Gavin is still the athlete, playing for a minor-league hockey team. Michael still hates him. But fate loves a good laugh, and the pair end up stranded together during a flood. Things heat up fast, but can they survive more secrets or will Gavin finally destroy Michael for good?
